An Asian Development Bank case study describes solar photovoltaic pumping systems used for agricultural irrigation in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The systems are designed around a seasonal load: farmers use solar electricity to lift water during the cropping season, while surplus generation can be exported to the grid when irrigation demand falls.
The model matters because it treats the pump as part of a wider rural energy system rather than as an isolated replacement for a diesel engine. The case study says the programme was implemented through Bangladesh’s rural electricity cooperatives and was intended to reduce exposure to diesel prices while making better use of the PV array outside the main irrigation window.
For buyers, the important questions are practical. A project needs a clear water requirement, a hydraulic design, an interconnection route and a plan for operating the system when irrigation demand changes. Net-metering rules and utility settlement are not the same in every market, so the reported approach should be treated as a reference model, not a guaranteed business case.
Aquasolar did not participate in this external project. The lesson for solar-water projects is to evaluate pumping, storage, protection and grid interfaces together, with groundwater limits and seasonal demand included in the specification.

What to verify before specifying a similar system
- Seasonal flow and head requirements, not only the PV nameplate.
- Utility interconnection, export limits and settlement rules.
- Water-resource safeguards and an operating plan for low-demand periods.
