ARDE-KUBAHO reported a provisional handover of a solar-powered irrigation system in Nyarubaka Sector, Kamonyi District, Rwanda, on 18 September 2026. The project is intended to improve water reliability for agricultural production in the Kayumbu watershed and reduce dependence on increasingly unpredictable rainfall.

The published description gives a clear hydraulic sequence: an intake draws water from a river into a central sump; a solar-powered motor pump lifts the water uphill to a holding dam; and gravity-fed networks distribute it to surrounding hillside fields. That arrangement uses stored water as the buffer between variable solar production and irrigation demand.

The design lesson

The project illustrates why site surveys are central to solar pumping. The intake level, lift to the dam, pipe friction, storage volume and field distribution pressure must be checked together. Pumping more water during strong sun is useful only if the source, storage and downstream network can safely accept it.

A practical commissioning record should document measured flow, total head, operating current, water-level controls, dry-run protection and the condition of the intake and pipeline. Those records help the water-user committee operate the system when river levels and crop demand change.

Why gravity storage matters

Using a holding dam can shift part of the energy-storage task from batteries to water. It can also simplify daytime operation, but it does not remove the need to manage overflow, sediment, seasonal source yield or water allocation between fields.

Aquasolar did not participate in this external project. The transferable point is to design the pump, PV array, controller, storage and irrigation network as one system with a measurable duty point.

FAQ

How does the Nyarubaka system move water?

The reported layout pumps river water from an intake and sump uphill to a holding dam, then distributes it through gravity-fed networks.

Is the project fully commissioned?

The source describes a provisional handover, so final acceptance and long-term operating performance should not be assumed from the announcement alone.
