The International Water Management Institute, part of CGIAR, describes a programme in which grid-connected solar irrigation pumps let farmers sell surplus electricity to the grid. The August 2026 report presents the approach as a way to combine lower-carbon irrigation with incentives for more responsible groundwater use.

That distinction is important. A standalone solar pump can reduce the marginal cost of pumping, which may encourage over-pumping where water governance is weak. Connecting the array to the grid creates another value stream for unused generation, but it does not remove the need for metering, abstraction limits, farmer training or local monitoring.

For system designers, the water-management layer belongs in the project brief from the start. Pump selection should follow a verified duty point and permitted abstraction, while the electrical design should account for export, protection and communications. A productive solar field is not evidence that a groundwater plan is sustainable.

Aquasolar did not participate in the programme described by CGIAR. The practical takeaway is to pair solar pumping with transparent water accounting and controls that make seasonal operation visible.
